The picture above is one of my favorites. It was taken on the day of my ordination at the cathedral’s undercroft. I had been given the stole by the church I was stationed at as a postulant. Notice the hair starting to turn like the autumn leaves!!
I felt called by God to the diaconate. I liked helping people and helping out. And, of course, spreading the good news of Jesus Christ by reading the Gospel at services and by example. I worked at All Saints in Bensalem, Grace Church in Port Richmond, Trinity Oxford and All Saints Fallsington (now and then). I had to retire from active ministry when John had his cancer surgery and all the complications that went on for a few years. I did not have the time to devote to ministry, take care of him, and work. He was my priority.
Due to certain circumstances we found ourselves looking for another church a couple of years ago. We decided to look into St. Luke’s (at the urging of John and Carol Lang) and All Saints Torresdale. Well, we never made it to All Saints Torresdale. John fell in love with St. Luke’s. He was very fond of Fr. Tim and all the parishioners. He took to St Luke’s like a fish to water. Me? I am the cautious one. Having been assigned to so many churches, I sat back and observed before I made any decisions. Yes, I loved Fr Tim’s sermons, but I wanted to get to know the parishioners. Because it is not just a priest who makes up a church.
It didn’t take long. I saw how kind and loving all of you were especially to John. And this was at a time when he really needed the spiritual support. And then you were the same with me during my surgery. This is primarily why we came to love being at St. Luke’s, because of your genuine love and support. But to me you were there for my John. This is the greatest thing anyone could have done for me. And when he passed, you were there for me, and continue to be there.
My priorities in life are my God, my family, and St. Luke’s, because you are my family too.
